Website:http://www.martineinn.com This gracious palace that sits high on the cliffs of Pacific Grove overlooking the rocky coastline of the Monterey Bay was built in 1899. In 1901, Laura and James Parke, of Parke Davis Pharmaceuticals, purchased it for their family home. The house was originally a true Victorian with a cupola, dormers and grape arbors. Mrs. Parke is remembered as a reigning regal lady who entertained many dignitaries in this beautiful home. The mansion was sold in 1942 after the Parkes sited submarines in the Bay. In 1972, Norah and Homer Martine purchased the property. It is now operated by the next generation: Don Martine. Over the years, the mansion was converted from a Victorian to a Mediterranean-style house with 23 rooms and 4 Suites: $165 - $300 Rooms w/fireplace $185 and up, partial ocean view $220, full ocean view $240 - $300. All have bathrooms with clawfoot tubs, marble sinks and brass fixtures. Authentic museum antiques and push button light switches are turn-of-the-century touches throughout the mansion . Exotic woodwork is everywhere such as Siamese Teak outside gates, Honduras Mahogany trim in the parlor and dining rooms, and a Spanish Cedar staircase to the second floor. Authentic Victorian wall coverings and paint colors complete the luxurious interior design. Victorian and Old Sheffield silver pieces are used daily. Behind the house is the Carriage House complete with a collection of Old MG's . It adjoins the courtyard with an oriental fountain in a decorative pond, a popular wedding site. The Martine Inn is four blocks from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row. |
